Overview of Role

Thorn SDS are a niche Managed Service Provider based in Alton, Hampshire, who are committed to enabling technology organisations and professionals to thrive within the Space, Defence and Security sectors. We are currently looking for an experienced Fixed Term Contract Data Engineer to work at our secure site in Farnborough. We anticipate this role to continue for 10 months, with the possibility of extending.

As Data Engineer, you will be responsible for designing the data management strategy and the processes for the project’s system, and ensuring the datasets and ETL processes are optimised to enable to correct datasets to be drawn for analysis. You will assist the Authority in designing, building and maintaining the infrastructure to support data storage, processing and retrieval.

The role may require travel to various sites within the UK which will require overnight stays.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement the data management strategy for the system.
  • Optimise datasets and ETL processes to enable accurate and efficient data analysis.
  • Assist in designing, building, and maintaining the infrastructure for data storage, processing, and retrieval.
  • Implement best practices in infrastructure engineering and DevOps principles.
  • Code and script in Python to enhance data engineering processes.
  • Utilise SQL skills for efficient data querying and manipulation.
  • Develop and manage data pipelines for seamless data flow.
  • Perform data modelling to ensure effective representation of high-value data.
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of data observability.
  • Utilise and implement AWS technologies, including (but not limited to) Lambda, S3, EC2, Cloudwatch, IAM, and Sagemaker.
  • Stay updated on AWS services and features relevant to the system.
  • Produce data models in Enterprise Architect to facilitate effective system design.
  • Generate written reports on the progress of data engineering activities.
  • Attend PI (Program Increment) planning conferences to contribute to overall planning and strategy.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and end-users to meet project goals and ensure successful implementation.
  • To Join Us You Will Need:
  • Proven experience as a Data Engineer or similar role.
  • Proficient in Python programming and SQL.
  • Experience with data pipelines, data modelling, and high-value data transformation.
  • Strong understanding of infrastructure engineering, DevOps principles, and data observability.
  • Experience with AWS technologies, particularly Lambda, S3, EC2, Cloudwatch, IAM, and Sagemaker.
  • Analytical mindset with a focus on optimising data processes.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to adapt to evolving technologies and industry trends.
