System Operations Engineer

System Operations Engineer

Thorn SDS is a niche provider of specialist engineering services within the European Space Sector. We have strong values around the well-being and development our people, actively sponsor the development and training of our teams, and like to think we offer something a little different to other companies. At Thorn SDS you are a big part of a small team.

Thorn SDS is part of the incumbent System Operations Engineering team based onsite at EUMETSAT providing services focussed on real time end-to-end mission operations and the systems required to support them, including communications networks, operational infrastructure, operation security training and interfacing with Flight Operations. The services support the routine operational phases of EUMETSAT MSG and EPS systems, Copernicus systems as well as to support the preparation of future missions including MTG.

We are bidding to retain these services and part of our solution enables us to showcase 1 or 2 high quality new candidates that we will propose join our team, on or around June 2022, to address the expanding client requirements. Whilst we are aware that it is impractical to completely commit to such a timescale, we are seeking candidates that are applying in the full knowledge that this is the likely time scale and can therefore plan accordingly.

The role is based at our client’s facility ESA-ESOC, Darmstadt and is a fabulous opportunity for an individual with excellent communication skills in English, to work on a number of hugely interesting programmes.

The scope of the role is wide ranging and may include elements of routine operations services, operations preparations services and operations training.

The tasks and responsibilities can be broken down as below:

• System and ground segment operations

• Communications and networks operations

• System monitoring and reporting

• Operations security, infrastructure, and training

• Multi-mission tools (mass storage and archiving)

• Implementation, verification, and validation (V&V)
of systems (and their evolutions)

• Systems operations preparation and V&V
for new satellite systems

• Anomaly investigation

• Preparation and maintenance of operations documentation

• Training of operational personnel for systems operations

• Definition and development of operational concepts

• System V&V activities for future satellite systems

To be successful in this role we would expect you to have a university degree in an engineering discipline and proven experience in Earth Observation (EO) ground segments and systems operations in an operational environment.

You should have a minimum two years of experience in system operations of EO missions covering a number of the disciplines listed in the tasks and responsibilities above and additionally, experience in the system operations engineering of complex EO ground segments and experience of V&V of such systems.

The role will develop with different missions so we are looking for engineers who can demonstrate initiative and flexibility in a fast-paced environment, perhaps already familiar with the EUMETSAT or ESA environment. Many of the systems operate with UNIX/Linux operating systems so knowledge of this in an operational environment is a core requirement.

You should be systematic in your approach to work, able to plan and cope with tight schedules; you should be able to communicate articulately in English and be able to write accurate, concise, focused, and consistent technical documentation.

At Thorn SDS we are always seeking to identify high quality individuals who are looking to start or further their career in the space industry. These are fantastic roles with huge career development potential, to either specialise in Operations in the long-term or to develop the knowledge and skills to advance into related engineering specialisms.

Please send your CV and covering letter in English to by 30th November, 2021 to [email protected]
