This is an exciting and unique opportunity to work as a Systems Operations Engineer at EUMETSAT. This role focusses on real-time and end-to-end mission operations and the systems required to support them.

Systems Operations Engineer – Darmstadt, Germany

Thorn Satellite Data Services (Thorn SDS) has an exciting opportunity for a Systems Operations Engineer with a minimum of 2-3 years of relevant (Earth Observation) experience. This role provides you with a unique opportunity to work at EUMETSAT as part of the System Operations Team focused on real-time end-to-end mission operations and the systems required to support them.

Working as part of a highly technical and coordinated engineering team you should be true team player. We expect you to be willing and able to provide cover and support to your colleagues and undertake very occasional call out responsibilities.

Routine Responsibilities

  • Conduct and coordinate routine and special operations, including contingency and recovery operations.
  • Monitor the performance and quality of EUMETSAT systems and ground segments, report and investigate anomalies, participate in the correction of anomalies, and propose evolutions
  • Create and maintain schedules
  • Contribute to the preparation and maintenance of documentation to perform operations activities including operational procedures and partner documents.
  • Contribute to the maintenance of statistics databases and quality monitoring systems
  • Contribute to interaction with operational partners including ESA, NOAA and CNES.
  • Provide statistics and inputs for periodic OPS reporting as defined in operations documentation
  • Provide periodic inputs to mission KPIs
  • Support training as requested

Qualification / Experience

You should have a university degree in the domain of engineering, or discipline relevant to the profile, and experience in EO ground segment and system operations, ideally in an operations environment. You should also have a minimum of two years of experience in system operations of EO missions covering at least on of the disciplines below:

  • System and ground segment operations
  • Communications and networks operations
  • System monitoring and reporting
  • Operations security, infrastructure, and training
  • Multi-mission tools (mass storage and archiving)
  • Systems operations preparation and V&V
  • Anomaly investigation
  • Preparation and maintenance of operations documentation

A background interest in space operations and in particular related system engineering principles would be desirable. Much of the role involves data analysis, reporting, prioritising actions according to constraints, preparing technical presentations and developing technical solutions to complex issues so these activities should all be second nature to you.
