Overview of Role

Thorn SDS is seeking a keen and ambitious Systems Operations Engineer (Infrastructure & Communications) to join our dynamic team based at EUMETSAT in Darmstadt, Germany. This role requires the knowledge and skills to professionally interface and support our client’s infrastructure and communications team with a number of key programmes.

As we gear up for the launch of 7 new satellites and the commissioning of 4 ground stations in the next 4 years, we are looking for individuals with a passion for space systems and operations. Key Responsibilities:

  • Supporting the Control Centre Working Group (CCWG) for planning the current and future GEO and LEO control centres and support rooms.
  • Supporting the Operations Business Continuity (BC) Project, implementation of ECPs and update of operational documentation.
  • Supporting the Technical Infrastructure Building (TIB) Project.
  • Supporting the Facility Working Group (FWG) Project.
  • Participating in the OPS MMIN implementation.
  • Supporting the bi-monthly COMMS ARBs as OPS user representative and acting as coordination point for all communication scheduled activities across all the operations programs.
  • Supporting the weekly GEO CSM ARB ARBs as OPS user representative.
  • Acting as the GES/ICT representative for RSO.
  • Maintaining MSG Usingen RMCC — BSCC operational set-up.
  • Rationalising the Fucino BMCC.

The languages of the workplace are English and French. The working language on this Mission is English and you must be able to communicate effectively in a fast paced, highly technical environment.

To Join Us You Will Need:

  • Experience in system operations, preferably in LEO or GEO space missions, and/or ground segments.
  • Proven track record of anomaly investigations and solutions that minimise service interruptions.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Operations Management, Information Technology, or a related field
  • Experience in operations, preferably with exposure to control centre planning, business continuity projects, technical infrastructure, and facility management
  • Proven experience in leading or supporting projects related to control centre planning, business continuity, technical infrastructure, and facility working groups.
  • Familiarity with GEO (Geostationary Earth Orbit) and LEO (Low Earth Orbit) control centres and support rooms.
  • Experience with V&V of operational systems/procedures to ensure minimal impact on routine operations.
  • Exposure to technical standards such as ECSS, CCSDS, OGC.
  • Familiarity with UNIX, LINUX, and VMWare.
  • Experience with System and Ground Segment Operations Preparation, ideally for GEO and LEO programs.
  • Experience in implementing Emergency Continuity Plans (ECPs) and updating operational documentation.
  • Ability to assess and address issues related to control centres, facility management, and technical infrastructure projects.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within the Control Centre Working Group (CCWG) and cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent communication skills to facilitate coordination across various projects and working groups.
  • Proficient in writing accurate and consistent engineering documents/reports in English.
  • Experience training operational staff in systems and/or operations.
